HOW WE ARE FUNDED
For contributions of €50,000 or more, we draw up a funder’s agreement that includes, among other things, the publication of the funder’s name and the donation amount in our annual report. The agreement also states that we are ‘permitted to mention the funder’s name in (media) communications in order to ensure transparency to the public’. Lastly and importantly, we explicitly agree that funders have no influence over The School’s strategy.
Our first annual report will be published by July 1, 2025.
book sales
Rutger Bregman, co-founder of The School and author of Moral Ambition, has pledged all proceeds from Moral Ambition book sales and paid talks about the book to support our foundation. To date, this amounts to approximately €1.75 million.

Founding Funders
A group of 14 funders contributed between €100,000 and €300,000 to help establish The School in 2023/2024. Their support has been instrumental in launching our mission.
Major Gifts
Following the founding of The School, additional generous individuals, trusts and foundations joined our community of funders, contributing €50,000 or more. These major gifts have significantly expanded our ability to fulfill our mission.
Additionally, we have one anonymous donor, whose wish to stay private we respect. The identity of this funder is known to us. In accordance with our due diligence policy, we have checked that the donation is fully in line with our mission and independence.
Other Income
Apart from major gifts mentioned above, The School is funded by more than 1,500 individuals donating a total of ± €100,000 directly or via a dedicated crowdfunding campaign (see Gofundme). In addition to that, we generate income from paid talks and workshops (approximately €28,000).
In-kind Contributions
The School for Moral Ambition is deeply grateful for the valuable in-kind contributions that have supported our work since our inception. While it’s difficult to assign a monetary value to the time and effort invested by our network, we would like to highlight some significant in-kind donations.
